Laboratory Capabilities

Accium BioSciences has a wide range of instruments at our disposal to execute your study.

Accelerator Mass Spectrometer (AMS)

National Electrostatics Corporation (NEC) 1.5SDH Compact AMS System

Our facility features an industry standard NEC 1.5 SDH-1 Pelletron Accelerator Mass Spectrometer. The instrument operates with two NEC MC-SNICS Cesium (Cs) sputter ion sources with 40-sample and 134-sample capacities, respectively.

The negative ion beams produced by the ion source are injected into the accelerator tank using an injection magnet (Double-focusing magnet system) to select the appropriated mass. For sequential measurement of 14C, 13C, and 12C, the fast beam switching (bouncer) is performed by varying the bias voltage on the insulated injection magnet vacuum box.

The accelerator terminal contains a high density recirculating Argon gas stripper and two turbo pumps for maintaining the best possible vacuum in the accelerator tube. The accelerator tank is filled with high-pressure SF6 for isolation of the high voltage terminal.

The high energy analysis system consists of a double-focusing magnet and an electrostatic spherical analyzer, which together perform beam transport of the 14C particles to the detector.

The control and data acquisition systems supplied with the instrument are PC-based and use standard nuclear physics and laboratory automation hardware. Once run, raw AMS data is transferred to our proprietary data analysis software (CRABS) which in turn calculates pMC and then converts the data into DPM/g of C.

High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)

Shimadzu Prominence HPLC System

Accium features two Shimadzu Prominence HPLC Systems which are network-ready to meet our demands: HPLC Fractionation for AMS samples

Additionally, the CBM-20A Controller is equipped with a function that continuously monitors the operating status and, if there is a problem, provides notification and potential solutions. The reliability of operating performance is also increased with a variety of diagnostic functions.

The SPD-20A UV-VIS Detectors achieve the highest level of detection sensitivity 0.5 x 10-5 AU and linearity (2.5AU) by electronic noise elimination and a temperature-controlled flow cell.

Our scientists are experts in reversed-phase chromatography, normal phase chromatography, and size exclusion chromatography. We can develop chromatographic conditions for your individual compound and metabolites or easily transfer your established methods.

Total Carbon Analyzer

Shimadzu TOC-VCSN

At Accium BioSciences, we use a TOC analyzer to accurately quantify total carbon content in urine and fecal samples. Our TOC-VCSN can efficiently oxidize hard-to-decompose, insoluble, and macromolecular organic compounds. The 680°C combustion catalytic oxidation method, developed by Shimadzu, can efficiently analyze all organic compounds.

Liquid Scintillation Analyzer (LSA)

PerkinElmer Tricarb 2800TR LSA

Accium uses a Tri-Carb 2800TR LSA for Liquid Scintillation for basic CPM/single label DPM applications. This LSA system uses a PC-based hardware system with QuantaSmart Instrument Software. The Tri-Carb 2800TR LSA has the capability for electronic background discrimination and live spectral display. For LSA Samples, we use Ultima Gold Liquid Scintillation Cocktail from Perkin Elmer.

Refrigerators and Freezers

All Accium Refrigerators are monitored using Dickson SM325 Data Loggers and all Accium Freezers are monitored both by Dickson SM325 Data Loggers and an additional Dial-out System, monitored 24 hours per day. Each freezer is on an individual, independent electrical circuit, and is connected the building’s emergency power grid.
